I've got all the miniatures now: I just need to finish them off. At last I have a project that combines the artistic aspect of painting and the middle-aged man aspect of collecting all of something pointless.</p><p>In the meantime, I've been working on a sort of side-project. For a while, I've been playing the most recent version of "The Curse of Strahd", a classic Dungeons and Dragons adventure set in a sort of gothic horror fantasy world called Barovia. I happened to find a bunch of models that reminded me of Strahd on ebay, going for a very low price. </p><p>They're from a line called Vampire Wars, made by West Wind Miniatures. They look vaguely Napoleonic/Eastern European in style, the sort of people who crop up in Hammer films working for or against Dracula, perhaps in a gypsy caravan. Here are four of them.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg26Iq9ZwrhloXeH-4RDkchyom5MUyhtfLuSNbLxnitxWblrxvpMLTyMFcG554mcWqQ56CSvSsAXuXdEecK-OVZVsE_zOzKa2ct4AAY1e-I7D4OcyLu0cYg88WoZgmY8Fi7iHxEnXcjZQWf_xX-7it-jwgYlsqmRVEJ1SQR9kU59zvhsdsXUnVTaBUwvo7w/s3085/Fighters%202.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2333" data-original-width="3085" height="302" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg26Iq9ZwrhloXeH-4RDkchyom5MUyhtfLuSNbLxnitxWblrxvpMLTyMFcG554mcWqQ56CSvSsAXuXdEecK-OVZVsE_zOzKa2ct4AAY1e-I7D4OcyLu0cYg88WoZgmY8Fi7iHxEnXcjZQWf_xX-7it-jwgYlsqmRVEJ1SQR9kU59zvhsdsXUnVTaBUwvo7w/w400-h302/Fighters%202.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqXxYFLuieXuEEU6L0b5pPMueMWT-FiTFX1chEnq5vrZK4H6ECrm8LdCAYjFX2sZR7ONKoBs2MI-sPPfipdnu8bavOrMIXuaFRwmIizgSJI3nGXCRiLEKR29oR_ZKBxhk98aA61NY6Xo3oJGamiUzfQNKowp-wdfDXE43UkXYPP_80z0VmSfm5Hi6f-ok3/s3125/Fighters%201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2412" data-original-width="3125" height="309" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqXxYFLuieXuEEU6L0b5pPMueMWT-FiTFX1chEnq5vrZK4H6ECrm8LdCAYjFX2sZR7ONKoBs2MI-sPPfipdnu8bavOrMIXuaFRwmIizgSJI3nGXCRiLEKR29oR_ZKBxhk98aA61NY6Xo3oJGamiUzfQNKowp-wdfDXE43UkXYPP_80z0VmSfm5Hi6f-ok3/w400-h309/Fighters%201.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p>They're not very detailed models and feel quite cartoony and "old school". When they first arrived, I felt a bit disappointed, but they've grown on me since.</p><p>The chap in the green coat had a very flimsy knife in his right hand, which I replaced with a sword from a Frostgrave soldier. It looked better and was much more robust. I considered painting some object source lighting coming from the torch he's holding up, but it was too difficult, and I just added a small effect. I suspect that he's outdoors, and there wouldn't be much light on his clothing.</p><p>I also painted two dogs from a Celt model from Warlord Games. They look a bit like Irish Wolfhounds and would be useful for chasing peasants, vampires and/or witches.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkL3J4Q3RGtsQWI7O25sT_uEMel6wJl54zTRMYvx2VKS_E4ltqWDpb5YxxMq-NU8VqROZBX2_gP9HjXcbbD1aU1YYE3ObDgwj4WLoyQqCfG_4GCBoPvLWhztTCsnx2377oy1jlDCkWT1q4S-0hUn4dgZCDSzYddYLnJZoOHZRPUjy8wr-bM5Whp-92o_Xz/s2877/Dogs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2174" data-original-width="2877" height="303" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkL3J4Q3RGtsQWI7O25sT_uEMel6wJl54zTRMYvx2VKS_E4ltqWDpb5YxxMq-NU8VqROZBX2_gP9HjXcbbD1aU1YYE3ObDgwj4WLoyQqCfG_4GCBoPvLWhztTCsnx2377oy1jlDCkWT1q4S-0hUn4dgZCDSzYddYLnJZoOHZRPUjy8wr-bM5Whp-92o_Xz/w400-h303/Dogs.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>Last of all, I painted up a vampire model from North Star Miniatures, from their Napoleonic game The Silver Bayonet. I liked the model, but I wasn't that keen on her hands, which were raised in an odd, limp-wristed sort of way. I replaced them with hands holding a sword and a fancy knife, from plastic Frostgrave soldiers. I reckon she's broken into the family armoury in order to deal with some irritating vampire hunters.</p><p>I painted her up to have cold-looking, undead skin. It's grey shaded up with pink, with very thinned down purple glazes. I really like this miniature. North Star have some really cool models. </p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdPa_nDFWSigsHFbHQv8iayeTVAgmu2lwVnOrc-fn8MHyYJgIxJDYZXjpBaAIoY-5bgS-4sK9FII0MazQxk0ZLgiemS7Qie6ffTrbpkBv8-0G2CNWJAPhDDUgAhHEvLS4z4NJNnggfSYSE1uOZophYTapLcK4wYnnjNt0xYmUFUb5_4DZM6z6qoVzXae1W/s2373/Vampire%20lady%201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2373" data-original-width="2120" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdPa_nDFWSigsHFbHQv8iayeTVAgmu2lwVnOrc-fn8MHyYJgIxJDYZXjpBaAIoY-5bgS-4sK9FII0MazQxk0ZLgiemS7Qie6ffTrbpkBv8-0G2CNWJAPhDDUgAhHEvLS4z4NJNnggfSYSE1uOZophYTapLcK4wYnnjNt0xYmUFUb5_4DZM6z6qoVzXae1W/w358-h400/Vampire%20lady%201.jpg" width="358" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-aLmHk2Ax7rbIcdR__vcgwD0rAtFwuQkWavkkrKWI3PQYMvY8-zNjdPisBj7y3XgajdMakO6jA5MVS6Q78MlHSHyM0M2rYCJq6do53JpejBGiZ8tJEUkqbrEniypxfelhX7YEXBYVx6qud7b4luoAYAU5VyTJE3g7v6Jkt_4w2V0Es9UikI2EbtpNfcOH/s2405/Vampire%20lady%202.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2405" data-original-width="2203" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-aLmHk2Ax7rbIcdR__vcgwD0rAtFwuQkWavkkrKWI3PQYMvY8-zNjdPisBj7y3XgajdMakO6jA5MVS6Q78MlHSHyM0M2rYCJq6do53JpejBGiZ8tJEUkqbrEniypxfelhX7YEXBYVx6qud7b4luoAYAU5VyTJE3g7v6Jkt_4w2V0Es9UikI2EbtpNfcOH/w366-h400/Vampire%20lady%202.jpg" width="366" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br />Tobyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02756770672216703644noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2378625480640604011.post-28514378387098448122024-03-11T16:40:00.000-07:002024-03-11T16:40:51.372-07:00Great Big Tyranid Bug (and bonus eggs)<p> Hello again! I've been painting some more tyranids this week. It's interesting to paint a brand new tyranid model in my oldhammer colour scheme.</p><p>This is a psychophage, apparently. As one of the interchangeable idiots in <i>Starship Troopers</i> puts it, it's some kind of big smart bug. I reckon half the world must own one of these kits by now, as ebay is full of them going cheaply. </p><p>It was a push-together GW kit, which is another way of saying that it didn't push together. It was also a right pain to paint, as simply getting at most of the model was really hard. I'm glad that I painted a lot of it on the sprue. </p><p>The painting was fairly simple - Flesh Tearers Red contrast paint over a white undercoat, and a thin wash of Leviathan Purple in the recesses. Good as contrast paints can be, I don't think that's enough for the skin of a big monster, and so I added red and highlighted in the normal way as well.</p><p>I really like the way that he's got a severed arm in his tentacles. There are some really nice details on this chap, but they're not excessive.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHJeoHyrGlvJcTD1jhJouQ3hIaZ2dpYutF8XDJXNKQqkADGnpacs9O_Ltqb8Z-a6TeEVd3LrqCN5F-5xDrdk1cJyT2Wbhl0hdXg8a_uQXc0buIrFP9-I8WGHUjQfbdX9ry3ffKFmtIYG8hT05Kfv0HUvHSLMmJqT_sbTyYkKdI2mNYtQ4n65mOQi1s7PyO/s2974/Psychophage%201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2793" data-original-width="2974" height="602" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHJeoHyrGlvJcTD1jhJouQ3hIaZ2dpYutF8XDJXNKQqkADGnpacs9O_Ltqb8Z-a6TeEVd3LrqCN5F-5xDrdk1cJyT2Wbhl0hdXg8a_uQXc0buIrFP9-I8WGHUjQfbdX9ry3ffKFmtIYG8hT05Kfv0HUvHSLMmJqT_sbTyYkKdI2mNYtQ4n65mOQi1s7PyO/w640-h602/Psychophage%201.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM0AUXdd7wwOGQNigAtoU3mo2GCfxUcMp_dUOCTgYisaxdWxzNb-9mxmlbBZVjkMvdDpYz02Qxlpj4L7QZfscfu37hkiC3Xhmz8pPltNe03g9Ieu_c_9aE6dDhhsmjBDuNJfgn-kJ5IVdVzmUHDqnFv5fYd-kOd2uRTn3svMMKTj4yZpO8u-kEAOoqYrJx/s2891/Psychophage%202.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2844" data-original-width="2891" height="630" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM0AUXdd7wwOGQNigAtoU3mo2GCfxUcMp_dUOCTgYisaxdWxzNb-9mxmlbBZVjkMvdDpYz02Qxlpj4L7QZfscfu37hkiC3Xhmz8pPltNe03g9Ieu_c_9aE6dDhhsmjBDuNJfgn-kJ5IVdVzmUHDqnFv5fYd-kOd2uRTn3svMMKTj4yZpO8u-kEAOoqYrJx/w640-h630/Psychophage%202.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p>I also dug out these eggs that I made from DAS clay and green stuff about 15 years ago. So you'll just have to imagine them. Sorry!</p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Tobyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02756770672216703644noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2378625480640604011.post-59607204659849987882024-03-03T05:09:00.000-08:002024-03-03T05:09:45.046-08:00Another Bunch of Harlequins<p> I've been painting some more harlequins. I find that they take quite a lot of concentration, both to actually paint on the fiddly checks and to figure out the colour schemes. Obviously they're supposed to be chaotic and jarring, but choosing quite how to do that is interesting. It's standard process to try to draw the eye to a model's head, but I don't think you can do that with models like this. I reckon that their outfits are a kind of dazzle camouflage, too bewildering to focus on.</p><p>Anyhow, they're a lot of fun to paint, and the models have loads of nice details even before you start adding your own. </p><p>This guy - actually, I think this harlequin is female, although it's always hard to tell - has a plasma pistol (unusually, for these models) and a harlequin's kiss, a sort of punch-dagger-meets-food-blender weapon. </p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6_CYWVLoSqYVuo5Qo4zYpnE-5EK4bKn_KCjKLRvJAMvhG5EvINN2Go7qnziAO8fGK-2fJZCYXl-Rd4qg4zcAeAktHCBIUnOoodXMP0hvzZvmdUY9_M9HxGMllmAIkacnGTTg5lCUAx8x1LO8H_nRQtcyGxBYkf-ay4UCyuUUTKarzfdEtVUQZ1CrqpTWd/s2203/Plasma%20pistol.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2203" data-original-width="2048" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6_CYWVLoSqYVuo5Qo4zYpnE-5EK4bKn_KCjKLRvJAMvhG5EvINN2Go7qnziAO8fGK-2fJZCYXl-Rd4qg4zcAeAktHCBIUnOoodXMP0hvzZvmdUY9_M9HxGMllmAIkacnGTTg5lCUAx8x1LO8H_nRQtcyGxBYkf-ay4UCyuUUTKarzfdEtVUQZ1CrqpTWd/w371-h400/Plasma%20pistol.jpg" width="371" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p>This chap has a shuriken pistol, a chainsword and an outfit that a 1990s raver might consider a little excessive. I've not done one for a while, and it was a real pleasure to be painting checks and doing bright colours again.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3Cu02rkDwr7BNBISxmXKinmofeyc9XlsIvYir2m0Yw10bzquARtN7mj3HZzDLTMFhdnBeqyiB3JtGalnBF91vmhon7QPNK0f_Cp7TCw-GWhgKqm0XQjdQV4Qu4tDGp9sz8LtJYByGeqyj3dD2EstrLvgl3DyQq5znNgXxMDr5CIMOA_5XfMCbXJrdK0o_/s2257/Axe.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2257" data-original-width="1796" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3Cu02rkDwr7BNBISxmXKinmofeyc9XlsIvYir2m0Yw10bzquARtN7mj3HZzDLTMFhdnBeqyiB3JtGalnBF91vmhon7QPNK0f_Cp7TCw-GWhgKqm0XQjdQV4Qu4tDGp9sz8LtJYByGeqyj3dD2EstrLvgl3DyQq5znNgXxMDr5CIMOA_5XfMCbXJrdK0o_/w510-h640/Axe.jpg" width="510" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p>It occurs to me that I've collected most of the old metal harlequins from the original metal boxed set. Perhaps I should try to get the whole lot. I think that would be quite cool, and they're all excellent models.</p><p><br /></p><p style="text-align: center;">*</p><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p><p>I decided to have a go at bulk-painting some old plastic Space Hulk genestealers. I seem to have absolutely loads of these miniatures. Like the old plastic termagants, they're monopose models. They're really good sculpts, with lots of detail, even if they are sticking their tongues out like so many of the goofier tyranids.</p><p>I used contrast paint for the purple and blue, over a standard white undercoat. I found it quite annoying, as the damn stuff refused to cover properly. I ended up highlighting the armour and skin (somewhat roughly). I'm not sure that the contrast paint did much that a heavy wash wouldn't have done.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQbG9NsvPaYNxabNimYIEI6_pBfEl78a6ucxipHhSvGyjrgRCgRgZJnoZqA2mQ-OFJi0BKQT64KKru0wRfDGB8wWMWl6_yECBciOhNaxVDFrQXBIdr6kiROnDYq9ZErJUd9wkq_zaa7XjOPKoQx6ndJm6nwdSKparCS2h49KQxOj4to2bZbNusP40mzgS_/s4052/Stealer%20purestrains.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2164" data-original-width="4052" height="342" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQbG9NsvPaYNxabNimYIEI6_pBfEl78a6ucxipHhSvGyjrgRCgRgZJnoZqA2mQ-OFJi0BKQT64KKru0wRfDGB8wWMWl6_yECBciOhNaxVDFrQXBIdr6kiROnDYq9ZErJUd9wkq_zaa7XjOPKoQx6ndJm6nwdSKparCS2h49KQxOj4to2bZbNusP40mzgS_/w640-h342/Stealer%20purestrains.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p><br /></p><p>I also dug out a very old Genestealer Patriarch model. The patriarch is a weirdly-coloured, bloated monstrosity worshipped by deranged cultists and hell-bent on dictatorial power who, whilst foul, is merely the slave of a much greater threat to humanity. So purely a fictional creation.</p><p>While some might have made the leader of the genestealers into a bigger, meaner genestealer (as GW did later with the broodlord), the patriarch is a fat, saggy-looking creature wearing the sort of gold chain favoured by town mayors and 1980s rappers. I have no idea why, but it works in a bizarre way. To emphasise his size, I put him on a slightly raised base. </p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLtP4C8ZSRUATaHyeOaCf-S3-mGy0aFSq5hRpkYu083SPkGHMBt_lQCmeN8AqvHfIu0B_cB7aNMx8jmDoU-BNUaI13uiUryuW33cmBDClaWDN9DAOXB7lUjodLa2X8VNbIAenJHmApORG8fGu0-khjd5XReNFU7JPNdF-Ouu1fRpJKDFuIqr726d7ACbzf/s2444/Patriarch%20running%201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2433" data-original-width="2444" height="399" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLtP4C8ZSRUATaHyeOaCf-S3-mGy0aFSq5hRpkYu083SPkGHMBt_lQCmeN8AqvHfIu0B_cB7aNMx8jmDoU-BNUaI13uiUryuW33cmBDClaWDN9DAOXB7lUjodLa2X8VNbIAenJHmApORG8fGu0-khjd5XReNFU7JPNdF-Ouu1fRpJKDFuIqr726d7ACbzf/w400-h399/Patriarch%20running%201.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_R4PfSp0FLh8_VNZx2L-LFceevGqt1AeGF9xf1dW6b7tGWs0qTFRSBxvbGuCiPqH8xmpcGLWoepNIifhahXgVc_CIrlwQXcqCS3BfbL5icJuZdTMy9xq93QUO462XcQXciZQ0NerPbOaKyLOMK5QN5870CLBlA1DTV7mZ1DpZ8f8G26nLDbS2LWR6UIIZ/s2509/Patriarch%20running%202.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2246" data-original-width="2509" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_R4PfSp0FLh8_VNZx2L-LFceevGqt1AeGF9xf1dW6b7tGWs0qTFRSBxvbGuCiPqH8xmpcGLWoepNIifhahXgVc_CIrlwQXcqCS3BfbL5icJuZdTMy9xq93QUO462XcQXciZQ0NerPbOaKyLOMK5QN5870CLBlA1DTV7mZ1DpZ8f8G26nLDbS2LWR6UIIZ/w400-h358/Patriarch%20running%202.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuHuWx_4VcAawShry5-yI9SC33xDNpHqKI-BIKVo4HxAJrE0Fd9J_NF3a8h02BOIoExaKXHA1LY95pzicrC9XouFTNBQsoVaYGVMZtNioAiDZuCXy79sLTmDPEnPBz41irXYLPGitrMHcsvKcITQF0DjYtq8z6OPsECPSPYUi5qnIKWyr9rJt6fCDxJmIq/s2650/Patriarch%20running%203.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2397" data-original-width="2650" height="361" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuHuWx_4VcAawShry5-yI9SC33xDNpHqKI-BIKVo4HxAJrE0Fd9J_NF3a8h02BOIoExaKXHA1LY95pzicrC9XouFTNBQsoVaYGVMZtNioAiDZuCXy79sLTmDPEnPBz41irXYLPGitrMHcsvKcITQF0DjYtq8z6OPsECPSPYUi5qnIKWyr9rJt6fCDxJmIq/w400-h361/Patriarch%20running%203.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Here's the patriarch with his identical spawn:</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi46h0e8Q7ye56K5RDMIZNTnN44Pv1ftXb63pEaFo7Up3pDiTy0NOwKclZtVWxx-ewWZiwn7YzID3B1q8AH4nYgN-BHqSXEgGfFDhUWbtb0dibIUU3u36gvrO6bdOHH59gu27uIUmZLCokBGY3VaJTmbmHsz3ma2TZjBJr5RbRMJnqQ3utfOhliUiu1p2ba/s3972/Purestrain%20unit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2142" data-original-width="3972" height="346" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi46h0e8Q7ye56K5RDMIZNTnN44Pv1ftXb63pEaFo7Up3pDiTy0NOwKclZtVWxx-ewWZiwn7YzID3B1q8AH4nYgN-BHqSXEgGfFDhUWbtb0dibIUU3u36gvrO6bdOHH59gu27uIUmZLCokBGY3VaJTmbmHsz3ma2TZjBJr5RbRMJnqQ3utfOhliUiu1p2ba/w640-h346/Purestrain%20unit.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div></div>Tobyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02756770672216703644noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2378625480640604011.post-74365325748400325972024-02-18T04:43:00.000-08:002024-02-18T04:44:26.644-08:00A few Mordheim loonies<p>Here are some more random people for Mordheim. </p><p>Our first weirdo was made from part of a plastic skaven, which I got in a job lot of models. It was missing some bits, so I added some of my own.</p><p>He got a head from an Empire wizard and a right arm from an Empire pistolier. His bag was made from a kroot part, as were the grenades on his belt. I painted them to look like glass bombs, full of some noxious potion. I extended the strap on the belt and finished off the model's armour with green stuff.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh_QCxXAZwRBl481LWz9KpOMUiSzmlp_Zy9PYLOWqfhoWrgrl4YIgEZmgCUZOMmelLNIhVcH8EZl6fdnHUpAiT7rCCMt49FPC7vYScWaW0rLz03PbnBxiT_GpL8TOuJIKQQyBCwjtLb22BLB352WCNiJieay95hb8LacdsFxR3ehRuq7eizNzyJuF5i8ZA/s2804/Wizzo%20WIP.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2368" data-original-width="2804" height="338" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh_QCxXAZwRBl481LWz9KpOMUiSzmlp_Zy9PYLOWqfhoWrgrl4YIgEZmgCUZOMmelLNIhVcH8EZl6fdnHUpAiT7rCCMt49FPC7vYScWaW0rLz03PbnBxiT_GpL8TOuJIKQQyBCwjtLb22BLB352WCNiJieay95hb8LacdsFxR3ehRuq7eizNzyJuF5i8ZA/w400-h338/Wizzo%20WIP.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p>I considered painting the model with a sooty face, as if his guns had backfired, but I didn't think that I could do this convincingly. They used to have their own army book, which contained a lot of different sorts of goat-people and even a reference to a centaur trying to roger a unicorn.</p><p>These models have taken a break from unicorn-bothering and are looking for someone to smash. They're converted from plastic Blackstone Fortress models, which largely involved removing their guns and chainswords and giving them swords and shields instead. The shields are old skeleton shields, and have a nice decrepit look. For some reason, this miniature just seemed to go on and on. By the time that I was trying to get his torso to stick to his legs for the fourth bloody time, I began to suspect that I was cursed: doomed, like the Ancient Mariner or one of those guys, to assemble the same bloody miniature forever.<div><br /></div><div>Anyhow, at long last the wretched thing got finished. And, actually, I'm really pleased with him (for now, before he falls apart again). </div><div><br /></div><div>As with all the dragon riders, this chap was based on bits - mainly metal - that I bought from GW Mail Order many years ago. I added some little bags from the bits box to help hold his wobbly body together. The base was decorated with an old High Elf doodah and some steps made from plasticard and blended in with DAS clay. I don't know why these guys are riding around steps, but there you go - the Eldar are mysterious.</div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">*</div><div><br /></div><div>Phew! I'd forgotten what a slog it is to convert metal models. All that hacking and pinning! Still, I'm pleased with the results. The Eldar project has been a challenge, and my painting has improved because of it. This particular unit has been one of the highlights for me: partly because I'm pleased with the results, partly because the dragon riders unit is so characteristic of 2nd Edition 40k, but mainly because elves riding dinosaurs in space is cool. </div><div><br /></div><div>Here's the finished leader.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKrvLQeBfgyELOxhodpFnBawMdv23dEb4yfBa-hQVrWuHpAEbT_dFFNtQipwTj_vEpEELWjIj9rh8CHxYi1CIN_RcGEaIJGeZb37_FitzCLBFKBo_Yb7E6i6hKqH1atTPEYYPo4fbwEofy1zGYtfshZT-YeXReuad6W93ZzneWuxHwx-QQyUNds4yyzfU9/s3096/Scout%205.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2819" data-original-width="3096" height="582" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKrvLQeBfgyELOxhodpFnBawMdv23dEb4yfBa-hQVrWuHpAEbT_dFFNtQipwTj_vEpEELWjIj9rh8CHxYi1CIN_RcGEaIJGeZb37_FitzCLBFKBo_Yb7E6i6hKqH1atTPEYYPo4fbwEofy1zGYtfshZT-YeXReuad6W93ZzneWuxHwx-QQyUNds4yyzfU9/w640-h582/Scout%205.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE_g-eAnTUPCf8Jmnsqmkxyh1flyE6Of1v2zl6AdGLWLNKlLmSMxgg04l2_4TftByzg7H6VI_WyEiP6sorGBgX23biArprzrelrbC8hCZOLdC2E2R-HbypQc6zUJuBlarQpmAqWL_KnzJ78gbouETQh4j3bzbte8eT58lcWXT0398nnrjP7YVuKQS9Q2Tb/s2689/Scout%2053.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2491" data-original-width="2689" height="592" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE_g-eAnTUPCf8Jmnsqmkxyh1flyE6Of1v2zl6AdGLWLNKlLmSMxgg04l2_4TftByzg7H6VI_WyEiP6sorGBgX23biArprzrelrbC8hCZOLdC2E2R-HbypQc6zUJuBlarQpmAqWL_KnzJ78gbouETQh4j3bzbte8eT58lcWXT0398nnrjP7YVuKQS9Q2Tb/w640-h592/Scout%2053.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU6ObYTh2pS9jQXlVlEVOoG4Mc9mBP641jRXthUq6n9zax2qmZa739KXPrcTYpT_ypLGJ7vCv2LNVju0d5yp1cJTKoiDtN51lZFiZ0UH_1sKB5rBCySTNJRT2azoKYOQYEDYBxwjxn0VrwtQnUM8gxM-G7iVsYOmicsRdDch8RwXpRT0ZS_90d9Apf0rbn/s2264/Scout%2054.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2264" data-original-width="1919" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhU6ObYTh2pS9jQXlVlEVOoG4Mc9mBP641jRXthUq6n9zax2qmZa739KXPrcTYpT_ypLGJ7vCv2LNVju0d5yp1cJTKoiDtN51lZFiZ0UH_1sKB5rBCySTNJRT2azoKYOQYEDYBxwjxn0VrwtQnUM8gxM-G7iVsYOmicsRdDch8RwXpRT0ZS_90d9Apf0rbn/w339-h400/Scout%2054.jpg" width="339" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>And here is the entire unit.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnDMcuBXqfZ16MU8Nr2YaJTRUBVl3venOw6UnQ3vUQw1yqisgVXnuQx6qz4LDaAHfHh5o6qlxZ2OCCmvTw6NwbVC3kidgqboVHsaCIQS09HyeHV0Y-jtdramM4em6r0a0hilAiVznXaTPMA_hxffYnJtAKlqufLL6qk40b0X03qVJi-Fm5rbjhyqHHJqjb/s3705/All%20five.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2300" data-original-width="3705" height="398" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnDMcuBXqfZ16MU8Nr2YaJTRUBVl3venOw6UnQ3vUQw1yqisgVXnuQx6qz4LDaAHfHh5o6qlxZ2OCCmvTw6NwbVC3kidgqboVHsaCIQS09HyeHV0Y-jtdramM4em6r0a0hilAiVznXaTPMA_hxffYnJtAKlqufLL6qk40b0X03qVJi-Fm5rbjhyqHHJqjb/w640-h398/All%20five.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div>Right then, what next?!</div>Tobyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02756770672216703644noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2378625480640604011.post-34709732778213359272024-02-06T12:25:00.000-08:002024-02-06T12:26:14.707-08:00Chequered Knight<p> Progress on the last, and most complicated, of the Exodite Dragon Riders has been slow, partly because I've had trouble finding all the bits that I need. It's getting there, though.</p><p>Anyhow, for a bit of light relief I repainted this guy, who is a conversion I made a while ago. He's got a body from a very old metal Chaos chariot driver, an arm from a plastic Chaos warrior, and a hammer from a Sigmarine. I'm not sure where the shield comes from, originally, but it's very old. </p><p>Originally, his armour was black, but I decided to liven it up with a chequered pattern.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI6kRe1P6ilP1zb7OEQKrn8OnA_B9bxYhMaAT9cGekRbcIwVXXNdC425N5Nd0VK_Hm5og4l-hsixQIE1Wes3HqlW1_FmtGVNK7Elfg04OwTmoMNjoCXbpPPGmj0lPLcKiCJfDwIxVVpAPOlIa_11CNdzutf_gIuEFG8_5FgYCBs0PC9P6E8EFKfv8SWf8M/s2808/Chequered%20knight.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2808" data-original-width="2718" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjI6kRe1P6ilP1zb7OEQKrn8OnA_B9bxYhMaAT9cGekRbcIwVXXNdC425N5Nd0VK_Hm5og4l-hsixQIE1Wes3HqlW1_FmtGVNK7Elfg04OwTmoMNjoCXbpPPGmj0lPLcKiCJfDwIxVVpAPOlIa_11CNdzutf_gIuEFG8_5FgYCBs0PC9P6E8EFKfv8SWf8M/w388-h400/Chequered%20knight.jpg" width="388" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Tobyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02756770672216703644noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2378625480640604011.post-78283910938640841092024-01-28T06:22:00.000-08:002024-01-28T06:38:20.499-08:00Exodite Dragon Knight 4<p> The fourth Exodite dragon knight was the most involved conversion so far. Again I dismantled and stripped my earlier conversion, and built it again. However, this time I made new legs and a few other improvements.</p><p>The dragon was unconverted, although its left foot had snapped off at the ankle and had to be pinned and tidied up with green stuff. </p><p>The new legs came from a plastic Eldar Guardian. They had to be cut down and considerably repositioned to make them sit properly on the dragon. This was a right pain. I sculpted some stirrups, which helped hide some of the worst of my work.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF8zJT2mf5TlZd_rXj-7uzDu6Bmwr7QIFRx_-IDGdPdmKQW2sLIUtDL4pgS4kVg1TZ8vP2pQ5TCIg37DT3y9oiwrJMCTs0gyCwK8RAeooIaq7X2M4YxhYyzEDgMAvRgC9g8UNcaNAnGf4ML12Z-eON4_yOOZC9jdNtfB64r1vKlFk7WOmAzuITxZGcpJTi/s2610/4%20wIP%201.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2253" data-original-width="2610" height="276" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF8zJT2mf5TlZd_rXj-7uzDu6Bmwr7QIFRx_-IDGdPdmKQW2sLIUtDL4pgS4kVg1TZ8vP2pQ5TCIg37DT3y9oiwrJMCTs0gyCwK8RAeooIaq7X2M4YxhYyzEDgMAvRgC9g8UNcaNAnGf4ML12Z-eON4_yOOZC9jdNtfB64r1vKlFk7WOmAzuITxZGcpJTi/s320/4%20wIP%201.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p>The upper body came from an old metal scout, and the head was from the Dark Elf rider who I cut up to make the standard bearer a couple of weeks ago. This particular model had a sniper rifle slung over his back, which wouldn't fit. I cut away the butt of the rifle and most of its barrel.</p><p>Then came the difficult job of extending the coat with green stuff to cover the legs. Ugh. I also made some ruined steps for the base out of plasticard.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKVyCT5AVexxS-68GX3_yChTR91qWArOhF1ILRI-OH12WPT8cf3hftqGVLoa2_-psWQHJoLhKcIjdKXp8_jn1r2ISScIbLiG5F2nHPHYZzafZJwkBB7uVEvtFYoGZiSdG1bOazQkIfYwaIJcAQXxhqBeSkDsf37TB89oydTBxiuMuynccewhWEw3IbR57r/s3402/4%20WIP%202.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2996" data-original-width="3402" height="353" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKVyCT5AVexxS-68GX3_yChTR91qWArOhF1ILRI-OH12WPT8cf3hftqGVLoa2_-psWQHJoLhKcIjdKXp8_jn1r2ISScIbLiG5F2nHPHYZzafZJwkBB7uVEvtFYoGZiSdG1bOazQkIfYwaIJcAQXxhqBeSkDsf37TB89oydTBxiuMuynccewhWEw3IbR57r/w400-h353/4%20WIP%202.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>I added a weird sensor to the model's back, to sit in the place where the rifle had been. The sensor top was made from a random Eldar sensor from some gun crew, and the length of it was made out of an old Dark Eldar gun barrel. This is clearly the comms officer.</p><p>Painting this guy wasn't especially complex, but it just seemed to go on and on. I slightly cheated here: this rider has dismounted in order to take a difficult shot, and to give me a rest from hacking up metal. The model is just an old metal Eldar scout (such good miniatures!) and the steed is another old Dark Elf Cold One. It didn't have a tail so I sculpted one out of green stuff, and I have to say that it's not bad. </p><p>I added a bit of random scenery to the base, which seems to be a broken Eldar relic. For an ancient race, the Eldar don't seem to be able to make anything to last.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTcmea6XoFqE9q2Y-uykTWRbp9dm1HglVRKE_4cuinOqXO51Ut369sH1FjKwgDasSPxZEyAMcjREpNuoFBULdC-Ki42USQExg1L1XCAwnWpXUEEtRRuN422r93q3KitXCsd-rFJZ-z8DrWR5wvv9egov8Hg9TuVBjxSByESHL8Tn-X2ctMnD861QbmhpbS/s2780/Scout%203.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2301" data-original-width="2780" height="530" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTcmea6XoFqE9q2Y-uykTWRbp9dm1HglVRKE_4cuinOqXO51Ut369sH1FjKwgDasSPxZEyAMcjREpNuoFBULdC-Ki42USQExg1L1XCAwnWpXUEEtRRuN422r93q3KitXCsd-rFJZ-z8DrWR5wvv9egov8Hg9TuVBjxSByESHL8Tn-X2ctMnD861QbmhpbS/w640-h530/Scout%203.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>Here's the unit so far. </p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigoBq8Zx9j6OZ_BR231dGE_tSZ3RFKPRWJvJVNkdQB3SNbdjgXbOhrBlkTuQWS6MTQl0RDeK0BrFUtK81CA6w5luBqijhVQsPg1a5PYu-Fe-g6wGzK0dcTvb-zw3AElaxKV7BNHRNtzoZ5dT4TTQHVTNldKhnVjSyzwWKjnMVy0foqBYqMLDW_pkz6ZfXQ/s3582/1st%20three.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2736" data-original-width="3582" height="488" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigoBq8Zx9j6OZ_BR231dGE_tSZ3RFKPRWJvJVNkdQB3SNbdjgXbOhrBlkTuQWS6MTQl0RDeK0BrFUtK81CA6w5luBqijhVQsPg1a5PYu-Fe-g6wGzK0dcTvb-zw3AElaxKV7BNHRNtzoZ5dT4TTQHVTNldKhnVjSyzwWKjnMVy0foqBYqMLDW_pkz6ZfXQ/w640-h488/1st%20three.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p>The next model is going to require a lot of cutting. In the old days, Games Workshop would often release rules for a unit without making a model for it, or waiting a very long time to make the model available. Unsurprisingly, people would convert their own versions. This was the case with the Tyranid tervigon.</p><p>The tervigon is a sort of biological personnel carrier, whose job it is to give birth to units of termagants and to bolster the ones that are already on the battlefield. Unsurprisingly, large and unwholesome egg sacs are involved. </p><p>While this is appealing in a gross sort of way*, I find it hard to imagine how it would work in practice. A typical game of 40k probably takes about 15 minutes in "real world" time, and to squeeze out a load of termagants and for them to become awake enough for battle in that time shows some serious parenting skills. I reckon it would make more "sense" for the tervigon to have a sort of portable teleporter on its back, that would make termagants zap onto the battlefield.</p><p>Alternatively, the tervigon might act as a sort of biological delivery van: it doesn't actually produce the eggs, but collects an egg sac and dumps it in the battlefield, then scuttles back for another. Anyhow, enough speculation, and more monster.</p><p style="text-align: center;">*</p><p>Years ago, I had a load of plastic tyranid bits and a burning urge to make my own tervigon. So, I bought the mid-section of a plastic dragon, turned it upside-down and got to work. The legs were carnifex limbs lengthened (pretty obviously) with sprue. The head was a carnifex head, and the egg sac was DAS clay and green stuff.</p><p>I found this thing and decided to give it a fresh new paint job (red ones grow faster, after all). Some of the conversion work could have done with a tidy-up, but I left it as is, largely out of laziness. I painted it in the style of my recent oldhammer termagants. I also added a nasty bum-pipe coming out of the bottom of the egg sac, through which it can poop minions. </p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHnsBYn-4DL0Asw18nIdGFyZvBh1z8mGUoUPNUYIicMU2oX7TJSycCSTI069asdVkiWhu5OdG1W1QAsREd-rmcwLgE9KslGbq2YRNYjmqcxWaOOgbZGRkzj6jtnworuqfjX9xYZiLgisxCl8euQ9_67TWVZxabA0iDY-9_UK0HQQptM6ZVkks219MQ0yPI/s2992/Tervigon%201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2661" data-original-width="2992" height="570" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHnsBYn-4DL0Asw18nIdGFyZvBh1z8mGUoUPNUYIicMU2oX7TJSycCSTI069asdVkiWhu5OdG1W1QAsREd-rmcwLgE9KslGbq2YRNYjmqcxWaOOgbZGRkzj6jtnworuqfjX9xYZiLgisxCl8euQ9_67TWVZxabA0iDY-9_UK0HQQptM6ZVkks219MQ0yPI/w640-h570/Tervigon%201.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMOLuOLYQF77L1CRgW8cgTr2t7WX5wxTgY5aZbfFGgEx9PbzwiOfW9417Ds2coDaCt2UyBQdOkee_5_GgmR8A8me9G3tr6_xgabGbzfs5l2tWiH-hRveZbcYPrMeAqVpcH9lP6ysxfcT-GZcVYFMQHM53Jin9O0Cu9GKRI564dKh1CI1lwCKUiSfWkBbHX/s3060/Tervigon%202.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2866" data-original-width="3060" height="600" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMOLuOLYQF77L1CRgW8cgTr2t7WX5wxTgY5aZbfFGgEx9PbzwiOfW9417Ds2coDaCt2UyBQdOkee_5_GgmR8A8me9G3tr6_xgabGbzfs5l2tWiH-hRveZbcYPrMeAqVpcH9lP6ysxfcT-GZcVYFMQHM53Jin9O0Cu9GKRI564dKh1CI1lwCKUiSfWkBbHX/w640-h600/Tervigon%202.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieDa5fLeYP27n4pFaM4_DEh3r1HRE66O6KnmlYD1lTFq1aZ0tPHue40yg15QaOuApJUjuJ_dowLzLXzWA3A404jB1-AJMO-ko3bQeQwDGOmYROx6em5pxoD79meSfr3eRobOeLE2X4HTjZlxe6_GP3jY4Md6aN6zYsmuKvApSJw0uY5_d_0JUZ8bkKFm5a/s2786/Tervigon%203.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2574" data-original-width="2786" height="592" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEieDa5fLeYP27n4pFaM4_DEh3r1HRE66O6KnmlYD1lTFq1aZ0tPHue40yg15QaOuApJUjuJ_dowLzLXzWA3A404jB1-AJMO-ko3bQeQwDGOmYROx6em5pxoD79meSfr3eRobOeLE2X4HTjZlxe6_GP3jY4Md6aN6zYsmuKvApSJw0uY5_d_0JUZ8bkKFm5a/w640-h592/Tervigon%203.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p>The shape of the model is quite reminiscent of the very old Tyranid bio-titans for Epic 40,000. I'm sure it's not supposed to work like that, but what the heck. The first model I painted this year was the exarch with fire-pike for the Fire Dragon squad. You're probably sick of seeing me say this, but it's a Jes Goodwin model and it's really good. A long time ago, I got some Dark Elf cold one riders and hacked up some Eldar scouts to serve as riders. Given that all the models concerned were metal, this must have taken quite a lot of effort.</p><p>Anyhow, I stripped down and dismantled one of my earlier efforts, rebuilt him and gave him a new paint job. For reasons unknown, the rider was missing one hand, which I replaced with a hand from Frostgrave. Like all my scouts, he's wearing a green coat and blue armour. I painted the dinosaur drab green and gave it blue scales to make it look a bit more exciting. The base was made to suggest overgrown ruins.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZtojPblD6AzpvrIZaz_WE8eFk8R7zcoUhLMGFIGDGEGyAhU3VGTIJ5hIJ9UmB3PUEmGwdQPnUiHZ2ZVoQbShzcqhlrEfebhk4rEdPe9gFvroyKiL9zULRloy2Hch4vOps4FqBOzJSf721Pga3uVPH6UlkdCmRg0yQ1n4eqiDs-J2rikfE9roDCqhbTEBF/s2376/Scout%201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2177" data-original-width="2376" height="586" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZtojPblD6AzpvrIZaz_WE8eFk8R7zcoUhLMGFIGDGEGyAhU3VGTIJ5hIJ9UmB3PUEmGwdQPnUiHZ2ZVoQbShzcqhlrEfebhk4rEdPe9gFvroyKiL9zULRloy2Hch4vOps4FqBOzJSf721Pga3uVPH6UlkdCmRg0yQ1n4eqiDs-J2rikfE9roDCqhbTEBF/w640-h586/Scout%201.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>He looks a bit uncomfortable, but then I would be if you stuck me on the back of a velociraptor. It's been a fairly drab one here in the UK, and hopefully 2024 will be an improvement. I've had a busy time making models this year, and here are the highlights.</p><p>For me, 2023's big project has been retro Eldar. I've painted a lot of models, including some great Jes Goodwin metal miniatures. I went for colours inspired by old, trippy science fiction, especially the pictures of Moebius, Chris Foss and Roger Dean.</p><p>Here are some vehicles.</p><p><br /></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; The Fire Dragons were one of the original six aspect warriors in the first Eldar codex (I'm not counting the Shining Spears, who had rules but no models). They carried meltaguns and were nominally supposed to destroy large monsters and vehicles, which I suspect happened a lot more in theory than in practice. </p><p>Anyhow, here are mine. I used a brass/bronze look for their helmets, as it's easier to paint than yellow, but otherwise they're quite like the ones from the old codex.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQvzJjbHIvLx6QzCJfZ5KxkuadEDp3IjD-jb4WgU0w82rlOuaP8DXjt2vGFX7mp7bqzgZm65fNngPKrI58wZTb47TR77Er8LAkIofe49iUi2v5P1h91vxnn8VO3kx3qOuaRkucAWWMBQab-sae-EPn9kEOZ2yNpiLOwbRU0gAXxxKaX0VTmpQh8qOiPDgW/s3269/Fire%20Dragons%201.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1890" data-original-width="3269" height="370" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQvzJjbHIvLx6QzCJfZ5KxkuadEDp3IjD-jb4WgU0w82rlOuaP8DXjt2vGFX7mp7bqzgZm65fNngPKrI58wZTb47TR77Er8LAkIofe49iUi2v5P1h91vxnn8VO3kx3qOuaRkucAWWMBQab-sae-EPn9kEOZ2yNpiLOwbRU0gAXxxKaX0VTmpQh8qOiPDgW/w640-h370/Fire%20Dragons%201.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXCFduu6y0JvVOaPAB1wrl4hEW-VYEiBgpdt2bf4hlXUtrCyxVxBEEWYrRvL-ZdMgUBJSoPHkGrhFoKRS8e0ztztBXVrXprdILvA0Liqh7gzSDsEQb_Yl207iUUR8Qz6bUchHWlRcBDFuoXRrENz25jNy_GZaU4cibm6CinPXcAJJDmyp3zIj1r54CtGMw/s3193/Fire%20Dragons%202.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2131" data-original-width="3193" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXCFduu6y0JvVOaPAB1wrl4hEW-VYEiBgpdt2bf4hlXUtrCyxVxBEEWYrRvL-ZdMgUBJSoPHkGrhFoKRS8e0ztztBXVrXprdILvA0Liqh7gzSDsEQb_Yl207iUUR8Qz6bUchHWlRcBDFuoXRrENz25jNy_GZaU4cibm6CinPXcAJJDmyp3zIj1r54CtGMw/w640-h428/Fire%20Dragons%202.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>I've still got the exarch for these guys to paint, who will be a little more elaborate. This would involve making some raised levels to represent the harbour wall and the dockside, and would be quite a big job. This week, I finally got around to it.</p><p>First, I ordered some foam from ebay. I thought that I was getting foam blocks that I could sculpt into shape, but unfortunately I ordered the wrong thing and got a lot of sheets of foamboard instead. This is basically two sheets of card with foam in between. Oh well. I thought that I'd make the most of it and use that instead.</p><p>I bought some textured plasticard from a model shop and got to work.</p><p>The first thing to do was to cut the shape of each dock piece (three in total) out of foamboard. They're basically upturned boxes. I stuck pieces of plasticard onto the boxes to represent the upper surface and to hide the joins down the sides. (By the way, use superglue. Plastic cement melts the foam.)</p><p>The plasticard was already textured, but for the walls, I scored a brick pattern into the board with a knife (be careful not to cut too deep). Then, to make the bricks look more rounded, I went over the scored marks with a ballpoint pen. This widens the cut and pushes the "bricks" apart. With a base coat of (unsurprisingly) grey, the dock pieces all looked like this:</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijSQm8VxGVvRQzr6HBUuJlF9uOD2tFHPHN6AOD4akhmzC80Grr_OD7_2mkdzL31ejF3SQ0MM6M3qu7zx1dWZHLLGlmlqKyS3aU0D69hU8rRaP3ws5yOTM36X0E8uKPsnE9Vg10H7Gl5BM-MLD783WVh2-KOwhsEqWbU9TIZXKOLXXT8dqbEVB9EbQB3I-I/s4080/WIP%201.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2132" data-original-width="4080" height="167" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijSQm8VxGVvRQzr6HBUuJlF9uOD2tFHPHN6AOD4akhmzC80Grr_OD7_2mkdzL31ejF3SQ0MM6M3qu7zx1dWZHLLGlmlqKyS3aU0D69hU8rRaP3ws5yOTM36X0E8uKPsnE9Vg10H7Gl5BM-MLD783WVh2-KOwhsEqWbU9TIZXKOLXXT8dqbEVB9EbQB3I-I/s320/WIP%201.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5ZWNW4dCAxP9qirPHsPmwdJSuLLdfa8HkoQQ2Wggor59DHfduaR9j5_1Bb-dvGPsVE8MN3MuoTOnDpj1x_6GZmDddYZVyPGzwTXG7yD5LQeuBADuzXQma-_njoYJPRTfKkKljVe-iK9aWzJQVxOOcklM8ep_y0EpNHsWmeUG7yYrgzRsuDWCiwlIIbMNC/s3777/WIP%202.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2902" data-original-width="3777" height="246" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5ZWNW4dCAxP9qirPHsPmwdJSuLLdfa8HkoQQ2Wggor59DHfduaR9j5_1Bb-dvGPsVE8MN3MuoTOnDpj1x_6GZmDddYZVyPGzwTXG7yD5LQeuBADuzXQma-_njoYJPRTfKkKljVe-iK9aWzJQVxOOcklM8ep_y0EpNHsWmeUG7yYrgzRsuDWCiwlIIbMNC/s320/WIP%202.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioRROgtqLyN_QxGHvNNAj-n51fJ3xVi6LI3GbVO1tB-ccd_JCf1lDXDWLSM9NAAyd7FYXs7R7SHCi_RB2o9LyhLiN-pgyVYFww3iZFGQ2TSn2puxvG1tgk4gagU_PSVamv97fyQCTcx4ciFfNbu-2sX4FaSyEE99epZiKsCI44s2dLv3YllcjltX3qkjVI/s4055/WIP%203.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2557" data-original-width="4055" height="202" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioRROgtqLyN_QxGHvNNAj-n51fJ3xVi6LI3GbVO1tB-ccd_JCf1lDXDWLSM9NAAyd7FYXs7R7SHCi_RB2o9LyhLiN-pgyVYFww3iZFGQ2TSn2puxvG1tgk4gagU_PSVamv97fyQCTcx4ciFfNbu-2sX4FaSyEE99epZiKsCI44s2dLv3YllcjltX3qkjVI/s320/WIP%203.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p>I then painted it grey and put a lot of washes on. Because of the sea, I used quite a bit of green further down the wall, to suggest algae. </p><p>I added some details with bits and pieces. First, I made a load of little rings that boats could be tied off to (or tied up to or some other preposition). This was done by cutting a square of plasticard for the back piece, then gluing on a ring of thin wire that I bent around a paintbrush handle. The gap was covered in green stuff. </p><p>I also made some mooring posts. These were very simply map pins pushed through plasticard squares and then pinned onto the dock pieces. Little blobs of superglue were added to the rings and posts to suggest bolts. They were painted in a rusted metal colour.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv91tOb4td8QXIas88aVSXOV5bZi_dnHwZ35SEGBK9fi6Md7-7r-_dEgME_FTjEKS9FejFx6yt6jW7Uw-MZiBG75cNFsX2GpCjYxTexBjV1D_s5HSTTeJWXM7l7KEWVrLPd00q0t3Ex3usjJpoZqkJa241YeT2gOGite1Ld5kZD522LXt86JAKj2VnJQdA/s4080/Dock%201.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2161" data-original-width="4080" height="338" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv91tOb4td8QXIas88aVSXOV5bZi_dnHwZ35SEGBK9fi6Md7-7r-_dEgME_FTjEKS9FejFx6yt6jW7Uw-MZiBG75cNFsX2GpCjYxTexBjV1D_s5HSTTeJWXM7l7KEWVrLPd00q0t3Ex3usjJpoZqkJa241YeT2gOGite1Ld5kZD522LXt86JAKj2VnJQdA/w640-h338/Dock%201.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>I added a bit of detail to the first dock piece with two baskets of fish left over from the Lord of the Rings River Town houses.</div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhs4oUw47VcsC9Bd3WpSCun4oQEUxNYE0OhxGGpZLKjL3p9unkFxCv1-Wpl6SWKp2K_nezKU8FHnFG0cPDmpGT8NaXRWMRvUvW7uW4NyzRXSrUJ_5PZWY6RblosKwH51vZ9GYiEIIFfBYccrfUyYLngKzQDBgMU3cDIiZYQLsNFuO1RsrfQsgmX7gncQhKD/s3045/Fish.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2923" data-original-width="3045" height="307" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhs4oUw47VcsC9Bd3WpSCun4oQEUxNYE0OhxGGpZLKjL3p9unkFxCv1-Wpl6SWKp2K_nezKU8FHnFG0cPDmpGT8NaXRWMRvUvW7uW4NyzRXSrUJ_5PZWY6RblosKwH51vZ9GYiEIIFfBYccrfUyYLngKzQDBgMU3cDIiZYQLsNFuO1RsrfQsgmX7gncQhKD/s320/Fish.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjW0LSSR6PgrG6M18e2r4h6BK0jtccNrKoEGd1yq6Xy7EUlWtJQtnO7AlwakCIdjFjlL5rrqhidSex2BhscBo9HwokMiH3-f54-caHnilgYnIeWUFMOVtX4nRXgkruuHctIDecKP4XAALx0l75rpxE3yqC4BYxxXlT2dgk7iLUMdomsKTU_RoyZBquzCG4F/s4080/Dock%202.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1944" data-original-width="4080" height="304" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjW0LSSR6PgrG6M18e2r4h6BK0jtccNrKoEGd1yq6Xy7EUlWtJQtnO7AlwakCIdjFjlL5rrqhidSex2BhscBo9HwokMiH3-f54-caHnilgYnIeWUFMOVtX4nRXgkruuHctIDecKP4XAALx0l75rpxE3yqC4BYxxXlT2dgk7iLUMdomsKTU_RoyZBquzCG4F/w640-h304/Dock%202.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>This piece got a bit of string wound around one of the mooring posts, partially to make it more visually interesting and partly to make it clear what these things are for.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ467v4aNsQzO0eJCBrXzXam5JnpYzHgth8Yn_TFmkiCSoAliMHFIQ3iZHROJTY_15g9f5viLVHH6HHUI9mu9Owbq-SCsz992_D8jehvOg1XerM4SABNjlZ759NOk0bj30pGTxUxhyally8dDqNEn_qccPlr2G9Tq_GtrVZLxkxwrrxDQP6papze7BMzA9/s4080/Dock%203.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1973" data-original-width="4080" height="310" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZ467v4aNsQzO0eJCBrXzXam5JnpYzHgth8Yn_TFmkiCSoAliMHFIQ3iZHROJTY_15g9f5viLVHH6HHUI9mu9Owbq-SCsz992_D8jehvOg1XerM4SABNjlZ759NOk0bj30pGTxUxhyally8dDqNEn_qccPlr2G9Tq_GtrVZLxkxwrrxDQP6papze7BMzA9/w640-h310/Dock%203.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>Bits of grass (made from sliced-up basing tufts) were pushed into the bigger gaps between the stones, to give the impression that I'd honestly intended them to look like that.</p><p><br /></p><p style="text-align: center;">*</p><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p><p>I've been plotting this piece of terrain for a while, and I bought an Age of Sigmar terrain set ages ago to go with it. I've been working on some scenery for my Mordheim/Frostgrave town, but it's quite big and will require more explanation. In the meantime, I've finished off a unit of bandits, cultists, maniacs and traitors, largely based around the Stargrave Scavengers plastic kit. Here they are:</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimOqPDXYU5B2WRRxoBSfueetVVbIU07XWstI3hTrptidA7l-DYFbmKHD8X1hh1PQi317Tm87xPQ4Aw5mg6mMdeWbDuD0sX99PfoAT0zW3jjw978uoytvZZ8xcQ8XZt4rK06LhmGyU6MAYY516t9hx_agSr3DgFhpQ9z5gVuDV2StiyQDro7SFnuaELzBG2/s3834/Raider%20gang.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2034" data-original-width="3834" height="340" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimOqPDXYU5B2WRRxoBSfueetVVbIU07XWstI3hTrptidA7l-DYFbmKHD8X1hh1PQi317Tm87xPQ4Aw5mg6mMdeWbDuD0sX99PfoAT0zW3jjw978uoytvZZ8xcQ8XZt4rK06LhmGyU6MAYY516t9hx_agSr3DgFhpQ9z5gVuDV2StiyQDro7SFnuaELzBG2/w640-h340/Raider%20gang.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p>Also, I made a couple of space weirdos from the Frostgrave female barbarians sprue. I had the upper body of a warlock left over from a conversion, and some Guardian legs that would fit onto the bike.</p><p>Unfortunately, they didn't fit. It took a lot of cutting and mucking about to get them to sit on the bike properly. I had to make him some new kneepads, which were a bit too big, but never mind.</p><p>Then I added some arms. The one holding the handlebars is from a recent Dark Eldar trooper. The one raised in the air is from an ancient Dark Eldar. I'm not sure where the sword came from, but it was in the bits box and seemed to work.</p><p>I sculpted an open robe/coat on the rider, being pushed back by the speed of his bike. This was... daunting. One side is much better than the other, but I'm not going to say which! The handlebars were made of bent paper clip wire, fleshed out with green stuff.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZkAKcVlLKthlW4hYyyeWLA7T4Y7bNh6k_2pjxzrN312vHwuJJ_i3D70zitaoolY1K8N8fT6-WVIrfw6TQ35vtkI5vdNqDWchsRzSTmzFWZmhp7uNUh8y_XE2TcXJ-UcL_1aLa8pYAH5F3PVMZJ9EZajmbxQLytKY3YACfXXeuKVJK2yh3t0TIc-PDN2fe/s2571/Rider%20WIP%201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; First up, I painted an ancient model that dates back to Rogue Trader days. It's an Eldar Guardian (actually, probably just an "adventurer" back then, as Guardians hadn't been invented then) with a big gun that I suspect is meant to be a lascannon. </p><p>The armour is quite different to modern Eldar armour, with some odd tear-shaped bulges, but the shaped plates and conical helmet are there. I painted him in the same colours as my Guardian squad, with some extra detail on one shoulder pad (I think this tiger-stripe pattern denotes particular skill on Craftworld Zandros). </p><p>I think he looks like something off the cover of an old Science-Fiction novel, which is what I was aiming for.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLD8BLbGygjZNjfZvqfjeTSj91vNQrZqmT_rlmhg9dZaYLBgaOTbJtm0a92_K6_eayAobOhiHakEJcfLWcc7dXSQ-6oBZ27FPIFCy6fdJYrlCV2JpAgz5sfHf-WnD5MVmx5fOTH45gjN3Nkg6IlfaE4XqOBkshYCcbRovMixPWHtq4IbGJQ0LEyGAVCWwR/s1694/Guardian%20with%20big%20gun.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1694" data-original-width="1280" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLD8BLbGygjZNjfZvqfjeTSj91vNQrZqmT_rlmhg9dZaYLBgaOTbJtm0a92_K6_eayAobOhiHakEJcfLWcc7dXSQ-6oBZ27FPIFCy6fdJYrlCV2JpAgz5sfHf-WnD5MVmx5fOTH45gjN3Nkg6IlfaE4XqOBkshYCcbRovMixPWHtq4IbGJQ0LEyGAVCWwR/w303-h400/Guardian%20with%20big%20gun.jpg" width="303" /></a></div><br /><p>Then I thought that I'd try to finish off an old conversion. Many years ago, I chopped off the back of an Eldar jetbike and stuck it to an engine (at least, I think that's what it was) from a broken Zoid toy, to make a sort of huge-engined flying bike. I found the pieces of this conversion, which had long since broken, and realised I could do a lot better now.</p><p>I added the canopy of an old Eldar jetbike onto the main chassis, so that it would look a bit more "space elf". That looked a little obvious, so I used DAS clay and green stuff to fill in the gaps and blend the canopy into the engine. This was an absolute sod. My respect for people who can sculpt in this stuff grows and grows. I'm still not sure that it looks any good.</p><p>I found some "wings", which came from an elf chariot that I dismantled years ago. They were a bit on the delicate side, but they counterbalanced the huge and clumsy engine somewhat. To tie it all together and for bonus Eldarness, I added bumps made out of green stuff to the front.</p><p>So here's where we are so far: </p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFyQ3t8AC8xOUPsP6-C4sNrBp-Tqc_TI1_RK1sj9QQ773cJFYTtYEvROgosGY4YMbiZ3E_q0-GPzkc2Kfh5ZSEaaFA_UXyQKQZK_YkIMATrXavFNgi0INKT26Jdd0UGySZfkcLvr5BfRRpljahY5wGgI1jOMr-sPU-T6CKqwszCJew9qHerNrmV0Mtp8Cf/s4080/WIP%201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2296" data-original-width="4080" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFyQ3t8AC8xOUPsP6-C4sNrBp-Tqc_TI1_RK1sj9QQ773cJFYTtYEvROgosGY4YMbiZ3E_q0-GPzkc2Kfh5ZSEaaFA_UXyQKQZK_YkIMATrXavFNgi0INKT26Jdd0UGySZfkcLvr5BfRRpljahY5wGgI1jOMr-sPU-T6CKqwszCJew9qHerNrmV0Mtp8Cf/w400-h225/WIP%201.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisv8b2bKqii8D32kXg6tCc4nL6jK1yzbTfn8m7kCmBkcoSDDgKEzVM8lxgggw9BNhk68AX8YPrfpK_M3YzgDCxUccIlAht8ODlsxUArJ4u84WZIe6yFKwCUtTccJWPASMouBmwEix9buecm8UcfjSnVbpXFvw02YEJFtbBxvy6aIPb7HYOXkQ_W9HvfjaE/s3461/WIP%202.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2261" data-original-width="3461" height="261" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisv8b2bKqii8D32kXg6tCc4nL6jK1yzbTfn8m7kCmBkcoSDDgKEzVM8lxgggw9BNhk68AX8YPrfpK_M3YzgDCxUccIlAht8ODlsxUArJ4u84WZIe6yFKwCUtTccJWPASMouBmwEix9buecm8UcfjSnVbpXFvw02YEJFtbBxvy6aIPb7HYOXkQ_W9HvfjaE/w400-h261/WIP%202.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhECXHfxAZYYF-elFHnCsz6MO700pM0uO5K9GU2CpDVLbrgybSxIVSIELr5GfComChoWMdC4-4hDmRTLnq9q1V-Nnj5L7YqrPJmoYsSqgKa7Zw1HQdo7-kIPcHehFgVDqxs2R2N9vJJHDMvOUcMoMzQ8yn3TZtpf9bP7JC-1pRjZeiR-t1VCZmBgfdzY0TB/s3212/WIP%203.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2263" data-original-width="3212" height="281" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhECXHfxAZYYF-elFHnCsz6MO700pM0uO5K9GU2CpDVLbrgybSxIVSIELr5GfComChoWMdC4-4hDmRTLnq9q1V-Nnj5L7YqrPJmoYsSqgKa7Zw1HQdo7-kIPcHehFgVDqxs2R2N9vJJHDMvOUcMoMzQ8yn3TZtpf9bP7JC-1pRjZeiR-t1VCZmBgfdzY0TB/w400-h281/WIP%203.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiKeZ1D3NiE8aCxTkAgk_ru8ilNWBi5HL7HU1Pl37btzbgbmfTaiFI1q-f8bYwonkrEUVgZshWuyEbOzVZprySl1bHjjIeA0JdKKVJ2dzpqMhbSU-VvE1gmH6iX-1LKMijCCjGP0uBuMbYVVylmFE-syug6zsyKdCgufU7WUtIEMc-2DvCQmZJNpPnfcAA/s3122/WIP%204.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2161" data-original-width="3122" height="276" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiKeZ1D3NiE8aCxTkAgk_ru8ilNWBi5HL7HU1Pl37btzbgbmfTaiFI1q-f8bYwonkrEUVgZshWuyEbOzVZprySl1bHjjIeA0JdKKVJ2dzpqMhbSU-VvE1gmH6iX-1LKMijCCjGP0uBuMbYVVylmFE-syug6zsyKdCgufU7WUtIEMc-2DvCQmZJNpPnfcAA/w400-h276/WIP%204.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>Any thoughts and suggestions would be very welcome!</p><p><br /></p>Tobyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02756770672216703644noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2378625480640604011.post-15742726172075936792023-11-28T10:02:00.000-08:002023-11-28T10:05:18.203-08:00Swooping Hawks<p> I went back to the old craftworld Eldar and had a go at painting some Swooping Hawks. My eventual plan is to have a (small) squad of all of the Eldar aspects in the first Eldar codex, with the exception of the Shining Spears, who didn't have models back then. </p><p>The Swooping Hawks were lightly-armoured troops who used their jetpacks to fly above the enemy and drop grenades on them, to deadly effect. In theory. In actuality, they were very hard to use, as their attacks were very specific and their armour was tissue-thin. Back then (and probably now) much of Warhammer 40,000 was about covering your men in armour, and the Swooping Hawks tended to die very quickly.</p><p>Also, as I discovered recently, the models are top-heavy and fall over all the time. That said, they're also Jes Goodwin sculpts and are excellent miniatures with a remarkable amount of motion for their time. I put mine on slotta-bases, and made some grass and ruined pavements for them to stand on.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC-dXNuMBBeiv1wKPamTFce9kgqpXhbnYsoDir1dn6F7DfPQ19q-AOROMtOgo4Rw0Bj2hVcvNgij-gOEmLr1ZL6L9_kfaTzo_BKbO0MNthMTGv5T_i-v9XCw7r5N47BWjaUgAi1dJtktMhNIV-TPYvMDC2b7frSEyaiL2vosJmgRDizghFsYheb9LQ42i4/s2464/Hawk%201.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2464" data-original-width="2228" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgC-dXNuMBBeiv1wKPamTFce9kgqpXhbnYsoDir1dn6F7DfPQ19q-AOROMtOgo4Rw0Bj2hVcvNgij-gOEmLr1ZL6L9_kfaTzo_BKbO0MNthMTGv5T_i-v9XCw7r5N47BWjaUgAi1dJtktMhNIV-TPYvMDC2b7frSEyaiL2vosJmgRDizghFsYheb9LQ42i4/w361-h400/Hawk%201.jpg" width="361" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggYpztFO2xuyQuB_K-aUY9_I7NMocR6HXJLkDT_f2kNgK47pam_2kOAPlOs-DauBt2Ry7vi57Z2WOE5DVSia4mpHhyn2JImy_72DTlbpSPAOWpvejdTRF-38Jz3V0c8v5lb9pVMWXjvevEMp6iC7AYiKY1AlQywpvhGB90kfiSgfscrfYQqlR1764UyI1-/s2761/Hawk%202.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2304" data-original-width="2761" height="334" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggYpztFO2xuyQuB_K-aUY9_I7NMocR6HXJLkDT_f2kNgK47pam_2kOAPlOs-DauBt2Ry7vi57Z2WOE5DVSia4mpHhyn2JImy_72DTlbpSPAOWpvejdTRF-38Jz3V0c8v5lb9pVMWXjvevEMp6iC7AYiKY1AlQywpvhGB90kfiSgfscrfYQqlR1764UyI1-/w400-h334/Hawk%202.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4hqq7MiMLd8dTi7eevwTifUEa7btUh_kNvCIKhXp2Vm4zpJLuHnbn-Rgh6BlGmBSG16MELHyl3pJZf_-DHZm3Z1UJJxsvgfgAZVmZka3oExTmobqCD63Op8WBvf3ZSXwQxLt2r_k0XLpqmLJ1zLhkLovmeXo9CB5hy4dxX2iGRufi89g4JOkjw2XfPVjg/s2855/Hawk%203.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2179" data-original-width="2855" height="305" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4hqq7MiMLd8dTi7eevwTifUEa7btUh_kNvCIKhXp2Vm4zpJLuHnbn-Rgh6BlGmBSG16MELHyl3pJZf_-DHZm3Z1UJJxsvgfgAZVmZka3oExTmobqCD63Op8WBvf3ZSXwQxLt2r_k0XLpqmLJ1zLhkLovmeXo9CB5hy4dxX2iGRufi89g4JOkjw2XfPVjg/w400-h305/Hawk%203.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>As with the whole Eldar project, I tried to use vibrant colours somewhat like those used by Moebius and Roger Dean. As a break from squinting and trying not to break anything, I thought it would be good to scratch-build something that I could paint in a rough manner.</p><p>A while back I was given some spare bits from the Warhammer Giant model, including a wicker cage that the giant can wear on his belt. I decided to make one of those suspended cages that crop up in fantasy films. I used plasticard and thin dowel to make the basic shape. The "rope" was added with green stuff: I tend to find that real string frays too much. </p><p>I felt that it needed a bit of balancing, so I added some rocks to the end of the cross-beam. Well, not completely, since it's the last members of the Sisters of Sigmar warband. I decided to make a larger, more imposing sister to lead the unit.</p><p>For this, I used a Novitiate Superior model from the Sisters of Battle Neophyte squad. I took off a few sci-fi details and gave her an double-handed weapon from the Frostgrave female barbarian sprue. It took quite a bit of trimming. I replaced her original backpack with a steampunk-style burner and a symbol from the staff of a Sigmarine wizard person, symbolising the comet of Sigmar.</p><p>She's joined by a small mascot-type being that was left over from a set of similar beings that I bought from Raging Heroes ages ago. </p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuNYV6kregq9szzJy0rqGb-_2HoYLojQPilnBnX4cr6ngTbDLG_AF-0_nQFIX4-r0yDall871LbJOQ5xfwBshdRnz9IlTK_qPMPKw-21V2l2ZG7fOmWN-eGy_CnZDxUOJIJP9refliQzHD_nY1RzWBu20Ffodnmscz2Woz-qu4R4SVYKrv60TDv8Avsx-k/s2002/Matriarch.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2002" data-original-width="1981" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuNYV6kregq9szzJy0rqGb-_2HoYLojQPilnBnX4cr6ngTbDLG_AF-0_nQFIX4-r0yDall871LbJOQ5xfwBshdRnz9IlTK_qPMPKw-21V2l2ZG7fOmWN-eGy_CnZDxUOJIJP9refliQzHD_nY1RzWBu20Ffodnmscz2Woz-qu4R4SVYKrv60TDv8Avsx-k/w396-h400/Matriarch.jpg" width="396" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p>And here's the whole unit. Ages ago, I backed a Reaper Bones kickstarter, and got a large box of varied (but generally not great) miniatures, made of bendy rubbery plastic. Among them was a beholder, a sort of floating eyeball monster from Dungeons & Dragons. I thought that the beholder looked a bit like the head of the Black Beast of Aargh from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGRQlmMM26RxLNMaAUxC8Cw52tHrqP-dSgSJuWZ1iAY_MygenHPjzRb3QNJESYAyW8k4JmkA-qYnQoKblbldaL_wIjiB0QEfsFDvbd7jwFrwHDs3NUZn6KIVfUaRXTF5vppH5VIlBwRe_mXrIMQJ2HFvClwZKPERBuZjy4yq3VzI4He6WUUv1C53srjarV/s800/Bboargh.webp" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="441" data-original-width="800" height="220" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGRQlmMM26RxLNMaAUxC8Cw52tHrqP-dSgSJuWZ1iAY_MygenHPjzRb3QNJESYAyW8k4JmkA-qYnQoKblbldaL_wIjiB0QEfsFDvbd7jwFrwHDs3NUZn6KIVfUaRXTF5vppH5VIlBwRe_mXrIMQJ2HFvClwZKPERBuZjy4yq3VzI4He6WUUv1C53srjarV/w400-h220/Bboargh.webp" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgp8xt97Cb4NFhmkYzjV7NJkdv-C2fn39O7ZG5MEwFFE_ATjBf-fr7svd_7uWFO2pFhqMOjTZZMZkPmTJjmfcff-3D8dH-DJiYZGkcCi-aCN7PS1Ji5N4iuI0CV3imXRsRQWPy6DqQ7tBNtpy2VX3QXWL70ulgDDrgbGRnLCBtKj7NDomUNXK8BWMXIlaSN/s262/Beast%20side.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="193" data-original-width="262" height="295" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgp8xt97Cb4NFhmkYzjV7NJkdv-C2fn39O7ZG5MEwFFE_ATjBf-fr7svd_7uWFO2pFhqMOjTZZMZkPmTJjmfcff-3D8dH-DJiYZGkcCi-aCN7PS1Ji5N4iuI0CV3imXRsRQWPy6DqQ7tBNtpy2VX3QXWL70ulgDDrgbGRnLCBtKj7NDomUNXK8BWMXIlaSN/w400-h295/Beast%20side.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>The Black Beast, which is actually green, is a large monster encountered by the knights of the Round Table during their search for the grail. It eats the helpful monk Brother Maynard, and then goes on the rampage. As they tend to do, the knights run away, and are chased by the beast. The beast is only stopped when the animator suffers a fatal heart attack, at which point it vanishes.</p><p>I thought it was finally time to have a go at making this silly thing. I started by cutting unnecessary details off the beholder model. I made a neck out of bits and bobs and plasticard, and an armature for its horns out of twisted wire. </p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJTEQJwSLBFyr8mAUQRIvnFHxyrwt8erPk7gPv8d-wKs9CZdJjhb9nP-0QipXTTaoz7TPyv5i61acXPWwtB_-nSuN5C1h0JPEPhkQcALUYsrAaR7RbBLYOj799Yn_aMCZvu0NfGpjUi3Oot-1iy0Fv18YE2_Wafu6Du3zmeZ8OLrbhVh-QVj0alykqFLBq/s3056/WIP%201.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3056" data-original-width="3056" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJTEQJwSLBFyr8mAUQRIvnFHxyrwt8erPk7gPv8d-wKs9CZdJjhb9nP-0QipXTTaoz7TPyv5i61acXPWwtB_-nSuN5C1h0JPEPhkQcALUYsrAaR7RbBLYOj799Yn_aMCZvu0NfGpjUi3Oot-1iy0Fv18YE2_Wafu6Du3zmeZ8OLrbhVh-QVj0alykqFLBq/s320/WIP%201.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>Then I sculpted over this with DAS clay, and added some details with green stuff.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTzVGRrQZKfdiAmw8tO6ombsYZCOdCHrObmWd8ZIhe-xmdxsuZlQD8EF_2PoRdKM0m_e_bWZ1YbV4HXSqKwKiPFDd7RzsRXsl-9_szlcKVleKQTwLf-Q-bTlC6l4W4Ri71_GrLdX_80gQQlm5_CLA53x4hyXCFO3kYa2j_EZZTqYTcGTt1UwFR4aGg3Lrn/s2805/WIP%202.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2805" data-original-width="2225" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTzVGRrQZKfdiAmw8tO6ombsYZCOdCHrObmWd8ZIhe-xmdxsuZlQD8EF_2PoRdKM0m_e_bWZ1YbV4HXSqKwKiPFDd7RzsRXsl-9_szlcKVleKQTwLf-Q-bTlC6l4W4Ri71_GrLdX_80gQQlm5_CLA53x4hyXCFO3kYa2j_EZZTqYTcGTt1UwFR4aGg3Lrn/s320/WIP%202.jpg" width="254" /></a></div><br /><p>Luckily, the beast doesn't have much in detail. They will be joining the augur that I made last week. These models are all from the defunct game Wrath of Kings, slightly converted so that they're all carrying hammers. This basically involved swapping some hands around.</p><p>I used cork for the bases, and added skulls and bits of foliage to make them more interesting. I chose a blue colour scheme because I'm a bit tired of painting off-white (ie brown faded up to bone). </p><p>Unfortunately, the models are made of some crappy resin-plastic sort of stuff, which attracts mould lines like poo gathers flies. I found it quite hard to work with. It also doesn't hold detail as well as the plastic that North Star or Games Workshop use, so it was very difficult to dot in the eyes on some of the sisters.</p><p>That said, I'm pleased with the result. They're probably not filthy and mad enough for Mordheim, but they do have some comically large weapons. </p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-rw599GCAEes9sTNPDVyV95qqGYnvdeWoHYcKuptjhClbyLfkltFx5lAUKgZPtMckZxhJX1GMNRzRZTxRUF7k8CTZnNcx0raFSkF-Yaq6fW4ArKBY-x5zxRexx_BIoQxvQ53U-l6k6ZtuKqt282Q2QyJ16zmDmBvc5CKcnMXCIH5lnR29zVPvrs5E5Ito/s3053/Group%201.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1715" data-original-width="3053" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-rw599GCAEes9sTNPDVyV95qqGYnvdeWoHYcKuptjhClbyLfkltFx5lAUKgZPtMckZxhJX1GMNRzRZTxRUF7k8CTZnNcx0raFSkF-Yaq6fW4ArKBY-x5zxRexx_BIoQxvQ53U-l6k6ZtuKqt282Q2QyJ16zmDmBvc5CKcnMXCIH5lnR29zVPvrs5E5Ito/w640-h360/Group%201.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0kDvhCSvVBnWOSx351J4PBhU-DBgkXm2rD1bbMUenFCl-8vD4KjrdW2pYQVOA8fkrBeFbbjEJXukL61x5GmrKUP8Vq1skiZWLDY8R96_D_0C81AsXfi9rfVVt_muyyHyJUjNfZvlHzMK6tMv6ZtEZBmURjBXBPO8wmvhyphenhyphenjL-ZhLA3slMpRubh19iwoeYz/s2344/Augur%20and%20Superior.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2057" data-original-width="2344" height="351" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0kDvhCSvVBnWOSx351J4PBhU-DBgkXm2rD1bbMUenFCl-8vD4KjrdW2pYQVOA8fkrBeFbbjEJXukL61x5GmrKUP8Vq1skiZWLDY8R96_D_0C81AsXfi9rfVVt_muyyHyJUjNfZvlHzMK6tMv6ZtEZBmURjBXBPO8wmvhyphenhyphenjL-ZhLA3slMpRubh19iwoeYz/w400-h351/Augur%20and%20Superior.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiwq_5wk_HWgoKFTOO6haZDLnRTfZNgEPmgB2keoB63GAsY7cD9BI8HoDhRwH3B6sGL_t59xRc7nw4hvXXkOJ4z70DIwDL3jgDxp9Ph1iJiMKflX12E7M6pr-VCWnq8SZ3hzH0QSK7aYCf5dh9kapP99uJ541V990jP2wIjRDsewBJlMeAQSnISy47H2Ev/s2293/2%20with%20hammers.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1855" data-original-width="2293" height="324" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiwq_5wk_HWgoKFTOO6haZDLnRTfZNgEPmgB2keoB63GAsY7cD9BI8HoDhRwH3B6sGL_t59xRc7nw4hvXXkOJ4z70DIwDL3jgDxp9Ph1iJiMKflX12E7M6pr-VCWnq8SZ3hzH0QSK7aYCf5dh9kapP99uJ541V990jP2wIjRDsewBJlMeAQSnISy47H2Ev/w400-h324/2%20with%20hammers.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Tobyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02756770672216703644noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2378625480640604011.post-41332762033179476612023-10-22T06:49:00.000-07:002023-10-22T06:50:26.342-07:00Scinari Cathallar to Mordheim Augur<p> This week I've had a change from the endless Stargrave explorers. A while ago, the local gaming shop (affectionately known as Notgames Workshop) had a sale of various models and games they couldn't shift. One of the boxes was a squad of "House Teknes Warsmiths" for the now-defunct game Wrath of Kings. </p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFpGUVuN67LrREnPBLAtOYkRG_qXNyURRoyBgp1ix0Tqv_Bb5DzeHxu5O2m4uTLbnKLwHmE6lsQb28NaYHhYU2fRQAYmvrPMDzknRgz626mzXe_0g7Rf_U5iTQnLgb-ofyxxw69dwogttDDHi27t6-JFCT8Fo-Q_PiStWP6rxuAEMM8Qh0hyphenhyphenL2TRA1Tpy1/s1000/teknes.webp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="750" data-original-width="1000" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFpGUVuN67LrREnPBLAtOYkRG_qXNyURRoyBgp1ix0Tqv_Bb5DzeHxu5O2m4uTLbnKLwHmE6lsQb28NaYHhYU2fRQAYmvrPMDzknRgz626mzXe_0g7Rf_U5iTQnLgb-ofyxxw69dwogttDDHi27t6-JFCT8Fo-Q_PiStWP6rxuAEMM8Qh0hyphenhyphenL2TRA1Tpy1/s320/teknes.webp" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>I know nothing about this game, really. It seems to have had four or five rather weird armies, and the style of the models reminds me of both manga and Rackham's models for the old game Confrontation. The basic idea of these models seems to be that they're women in armour and robes, carrying big hammers. They also seem to have odd bits of machinery strapped to them: breathing apparatus, perhaps.</p><p>I thought they could be quite good to represent a Sisters of Sigmar warband in Mordheim. The Sisters were an order of martial nuns, who lived in a castle/monastery in the centre of the ruined city. They were the closest thing Mordheim had to an objectively good faction, and spent a lot of time smiting evil with hammers. More of them later.</p><p>I also bought an Age of Sigmar elf model called a Scinari Cathallar. Leaving aside the fact that this sounds like a painful medical implement, the Cathallar seems to be some kind of maudlin wizard. I thought that, when converted, she could make a good augur for the Sisters. The augur is a blind seer who wears a nightie-type gown and goes into battle barefoot and unarmoured.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.games-workshop.com/resources/catalog/product/920x950/99070210004_LRLScinariCathLead.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="775" height="400" src="https://www.games-workshop.com/resources/catalog/product/920x950/99070210004_LRLScinariCathLead.jpg" width="388" /></a></div><br /><p>This is a really lovely model weighed down with a load of useless detail. I cut off a lot of the fiddly bits, gave her a new head from Statuesque Miniatures, and replaced her bowl of smoking stuff with a mace. I mounted her on a ruined stone head scavenged from a Stormcast miniature.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNoZ3xMHyMyEVulGa9299mKeOlwXv7UZkkDbkIev25Te-1RafZriW9IW_4qNUu7mexrFLNVHKOOUphUrJsamhUzhNVBDKb2EB8qw1vyH3GMKwgvR64xECgPVx9G2ytEF5PdBIHUwZOCMpKCugwq7ZZUOowRypiNxB7Vrn0H1QUikJFJ6mqkXgkAgfiHdju/s2628/Augur%20WIP.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2628" data-original-width="2186" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNoZ3xMHyMyEVulGa9299mKeOlwXv7UZkkDbkIev25Te-1RafZriW9IW_4qNUu7mexrFLNVHKOOUphUrJsamhUzhNVBDKb2EB8qw1vyH3GMKwgvR64xECgPVx9G2ytEF5PdBIHUwZOCMpKCugwq7ZZUOowRypiNxB7Vrn0H1QUikJFJ6mqkXgkAgfiHdju/s320/Augur%20WIP.jpg" width="266" /></a></div><br /><p>I think taking off the extra bits and bobs really stresses the elegance of the miniature. </p><p>I made a base from hacked-up bits of cork mat. This is a new technique for me, and I was interested to see whether it could be made to work. I stuck her on a lipped plastic base. I generally don't like these, but what the heck.</p><p>I wanted to use quite soft colours rather than the bright designs on other Mordheim models, and I was tired of painting things in shades of brown and beige. So I went for a soft blue. Here she is.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh2Nw3scAl1Dc-1GHWCSCIt72NMGH-OVIaoCia_t2xqp7bpJsyMxkJbGcET4oA53G7Dcj23-jjdeQDp7RVRZKytLTjcYisyl7XVfo5K7IIZLZvZcx9e4aMn8P8AJgWYF52ce-OjFrXRqgtCBFer5AdIEBADgz7CwKh4WIAYO0Vb603V8bAAY9d6LHlcCkp/s2147/Augur.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2147" data-original-width="1690" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh2Nw3scAl1Dc-1GHWCSCIt72NMGH-OVIaoCia_t2xqp7bpJsyMxkJbGcET4oA53G7Dcj23-jjdeQDp7RVRZKytLTjcYisyl7XVfo5K7IIZLZvZcx9e4aMn8P8AJgWYF52ce-OjFrXRqgtCBFer5AdIEBADgz7CwKh4WIAYO0Vb603V8bAAY9d6LHlcCkp/w504-h640/Augur.jpg" width="504" /></a></div><br /><p>I'm really pleased with this one.</p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Tobyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02756770672216703644noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2378625480640604011.post-26720899076367361002023-10-15T09:14:00.004-07:002023-10-15T10:10:39.279-07:00And Now With Backdrops<p> A very quick post here. A friend of mine backed a Kickstarter for two books by the artist Jon Hodgson and gave them both to me (thanks Ruth!). They're sets of backgrounds for photographing fantasy and science fiction miniatures.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHXeZrb16EikBRT0ys3d3dUTxDW0z59PDoxTvilB6nOeNxg4JrIs3CCE07qMB5J2Kbc4EpizbXlHNV_Ff0Dzxhfd8RdIH12AI8YYagPhTBl1arYP0MLyaELB9E1v0Yz6n4rH8RNJVahaen_3iRSe8tF-He9G0qhiM6kvFrHWYQ3adGconpI8zXN5_AtQ0u/s3042/Backdrops%201.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2258" data-original-width="3042" height="297" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHXeZrb16EikBRT0ys3d3dUTxDW0z59PDoxTvilB6nOeNxg4JrIs3CCE07qMB5J2Kbc4EpizbXlHNV_Ff0Dzxhfd8RdIH12AI8YYagPhTBl1arYP0MLyaELB9E1v0Yz6n4rH8RNJVahaen_3iRSe8tF-He9G0qhiM6kvFrHWYQ3adGconpI8zXN5_AtQ0u/w400-h297/Backdrops%201.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiig0z_TSxsbrwE4bPe65uaQMXz5mWjWgtG1dyma6zKRDkMsJiu0NqPPSRFdJTKtrwiT5A-BXzmUC0QNG5qPBUDDInXIOoRfQ8_3-YDfKpcQx21FJSwaO347CtkYypR1nmWBZN5QGeTequFAITRVVwizxPH-OxcSok-sHK06eyZGKPxXqk7BgymY4W9Te06/s3046/Backdrops%202.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2283" data-original-width="3046" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiig0z_TSxsbrwE4bPe65uaQMXz5mWjWgtG1dyma6zKRDkMsJiu0NqPPSRFdJTKtrwiT5A-BXzmUC0QNG5qPBUDDInXIOoRfQ8_3-YDfKpcQx21FJSwaO347CtkYypR1nmWBZN5QGeTequFAITRVVwizxPH-OxcSok-sHK06eyZGKPxXqk7BgymY4W9Te06/w400-h300/Backdrops%202.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p>I had a go at using the backgrounds to photograph some models.
